The Broshot Lifestyle – February 9th, 2010

Not the first time my sister, Michaela, has shown up in Nalena’s paintings but this one caught my eye when I realized it was based on a photo I took last summer (below).

Nalena Kumar is in her final year at Cal Arts and you can visit her blog here, to view more of her work.

What struck me the most about this painting other than it being awesome, is that as a young artist, you can pull inspiration from many places.  Until today I had only posted the photo on Facebook, and five years ago, Nalena would never have seen it.

Today there is an ease at which you can access inspirations; sending out your creative tendrils via the internet and snatching at bits and pieces of things that move you.

I can’t help but think of it as an extension of the human brain, that via the internet, we’re forming one super-brain where we share the same thoughts.

Although, now that I’ve just said that, it reminds me of this really persuasive essay I just read in the February Harper’s that completely contradicts what I just said.  Sooooo maybe I need to rethink that position….

Today is the seventh and final installment of an ongoing series of blog posts outlining my goals for the coming year…ish

Friday:  Develop my Visual Language (the big one)

Sunday: Brand Identity

Monday: Hassie  Set-up

Tuesday: Workflow: From Scanning to Printing

Wednesday: New Blog and Folio Sites

Thursday: Car 2 Sleep In

Today: NYC 2011

I told my mom that I’m moving to New York City next year and she immediately shot me the saddest sad-face look.  She’d had enough of her baby living 3,000 miles away in Mexico and was glad to have him back in Portland, and now, another 3,000 miles!  Poor mama.

Really though, after this June when my youngest sister graduates and moves to California all of her bay-bays will have left the nest!

I have a few friends in NYC (available couch?) but ninety percent of my friends are here in Portland, so why move to NYC?

To develop my visual style.  Many photographer’s whose work I admire make their home in NYC.  The concentration of artists of all trades is unparalleled by any other U.S. city.

What fascinates me is the amount of things you can do and experience.

My hope is that by living there I will be able to learn and absorb ideas at a rate higher than I could achieve here in Portland, or anywhere else.

I want to get my work out there and I want to compete against the best.  So what better place!

Don’t worry destination wedding lovers!  I still love Mexico and I will still be booking DWs.  I will just be flying out of JFK, not PDX : )

I’m shooting for a March/April 2011 move date and I’ll start booking weddings in the Northeast shortly.  Referrals anyone?

Today is the sixth part in an ongoing series of blog posts outlining my goals for the coming year…ish

Friday:  Develop my Visual Language (the big one)

Sunday: Brand Identity

Monday: Hassie  Set-up

Tuesday: Workflow: From Scanning to Printing

Wednesday: New Blog and Folio Sites

Today: Car 2 Sleep In

Friday: NYC 2011

Last December, I sat at the Hawthorne food carts, coldly munching away at some Potato Champion, or some crepe action with my buddy Josh.  I told Josh that I was looking for a car and asked if he had any suggestions.

My four requirements were the following:  four-wheel drive, good gas-mileage, reliable, and room to sleep in.

Why are these four things important?  The first, four-wheel drive, is just so I can get anywhere that I could possibly want to go to take pictures.  If there’s a road, some dirt, or some snow, I’m there.

The gas, reliability and room to sleep in, are all for the same reason.  To save money.

I have this dream of living out of my car and traveling the country like a photographic hobo, taking pictures.

How realistic this is, I don’t know.  I imagine, part of me is attracted to the sexy-ness of the idea, although I’m sure this will quickly ware off the first week I go without a shower.

So back to me chompin’ on some Champion, this guy behinds us leans in and says, “Oh, you want a Loyale.”

“A what…?”, I say.

“A Subaru Loyale.”

I think I’ve heard of it,” Josh interjects.  ”Yea, like with an eeee.”  Josh dips his finger down, then up in the air, accenting the imaginary letter.

My brain flashes Pulp Fiction’s Royale with cheese, not the blazing red stallion below.

Turns out, now that I’m aware of their existence, these cars are E-VER-Y-WHERE.  I see them ALL-THE-TIME.  And they’re SU-PER CHEEEEEAP cause they are SU-PER OOOOOOOLD.

So yea, that’s what I’m looking for.  Either a Loyale, Outback, or Legacy, used, to help me complete my future photo projects.

The Broshot Lifestyle – New Blog and Folio Sites

Today is the fifth part in an ongoing series of blog posts outlining my goals for the coming year…ish

Friday:  Develop my Visual Language (the big one)

Sunday: Brand Identity

Monday: Hassie  Set-up

Tuesday: Workflow: From Scanning to Printing

Today: New Blog and Folio Sites

Thursday: Car 2 Sleep In

Friday: NYC 2011

I’m the most excited about the new blog and folio sites.  Not that the other six goals aren’t important, but this is the medium throughwhich most of you will see my work.

Thee Patrón of Pixels, and Jefe of the Eh-chTML, Ed Fladung is putting pencil to paper and working on a new logo.  I shouldn’t even say new, because let’s be honest, I never had a logo to begin with.

ITDR is on board to do the front-end of a new custom blog that will debute before my weddings start up again in April.  So guess, what?  All you future brides get to see your blog photos displayed, bigger, glossier, and más snappier…than before.  You can check out some of ITDR’s previous work here.

And finally the folio site.  This will be a more static collection of my work.  A collection of portfolios. A wedding portfolio will certainly be up there, as well as sports, travel, personal, ect…   A showcase of my life’s interests.

The blog and folio sites run congruently with my brand identity.  Certainly my logo is a visual representation of my brand but I will use both sites as another means of conveying who I am, what I’m about, and what you can expect from working with me.

Today is the fourth part in an ongoing series of blog posts outlining my goals for the coming year…ish

Friday: NYC 2011

It’s Wednesday, but F it, we’ll call it Tuesday.  Now 1:30 am and you can call me officially caught up on Dexter.

I’ve seeeeeeeen the future, and it’s digital…

That doesn’t make sense after what I said yesterday about buying the Hasselblad set-up so let me explain.

My workflow, even when shooting film, once the film is developed, will be digital.  Which obviously matches up well with my existing digital workflow.

I got a chance last summer to see some digital prints up close, made by the best of the best, the output of a system that is perfectly aligned at all times; starting with the scanned negative, through the computer, and onto paper.  Everything is optimized to create the most remarkable digital prints I’ve ever seen.

It seems that with the way digital technology is going it makes sense to invest my time and money this way, as opposed to building a darkroom and learning to make c-prints.

I’ll need some new equipment for this (right now I rent time at Newspace), and I’ll invest the time to learn how to calibrate and align all of this for a consistent and optimal output.

And why all this fuss over some gadgets?  Ultimately it comes back to getting my work out there, to you, the people.

Also, being able to control the process from capture, either by film or sensor, to print, allows me to fully realize my ideas and visions.

And this is better for you and for me.  I can have full control over my work and my visual language and you, if you’re a friend, will probably get some free prints, and if you’re a client, you’ll know that you’re getting the best work I can produce.

It’s 2 am or so now.  I should probably wait to proofread this before I post.  I’ll just apologize ahead of time if you’re up early and notice some broad-side grammatical errors.
