This is the second part of my shoot for PEACE Vallarta’s Manos Unidos por la Mujer organization. The group supports women through economic empowerment in Punta de Mita and the Vallarta region. In part two I visited the women’s wood work shop in the Punta de Mita town of Nuevo Corral del Risco.
The houses in Nuevo Corral del Risco are identical cement project-housing built over a decade ago when developers evicted residents (some by force) from the original Corral del Risco.
The development attracted thousands of migrant workers who brought an economic benefit to locals with a price of increased alcoholism, drug use, and waste disposal.
Recently, migrant workers have left town and many local men have lost their jobs in construction as a result of the worldwide economic downturn. The people here have little education and little economic options.
And this brings me back to why PEACE Vallarta is so important to the region. In some families, the women, who are working through PEACE are the only ones bringing in money. I try not to write too much in my blog and keep it focused on the photography. So check it out below. (9 Photos Total)
