May was my first time in Jamaica. I’ve never had the opportunity to photograph a wedding there until Lindsey and Jesse invited me to join them on their adventure to Montego Bay. I flew into MoBay a couple days ahead of the wedding to get a feel for everything, to walk around town, explore, and eat a lot of local food. Curried goat! Mmm! And also to hang out with Lindsey, Jesse, and Co…Margaritaville!
MoBay was a lot smaller than I expected and the proximity of everything was an ideal location for a wedding celebration. Rose Hall Beach was just a short drive from the hip strip, near where I stayed, and from the hip strip you could walk anywhere in town. I love exploring new places, new cultures, and this trip was a blast as I searched for mix tapes on the street and paused to listen to the sound systems blasting from the storefronts downtown.
Lindsey and Jesse met in medical school and all this last year when we talked the two of them were always in different parts of the country doing their rotations. Literally all over the place. Barely any time together, I think it’s a testament to their relationship that they were able to not just plan a wedding but grow closer to their family and friends through the process. A lot of people told them that it would be nearly impossible to get placed together in residency. The joy when they recount the story of how they did get placed in residency at the same hospital in Santa Clara is inspiring.
What I love about their destination wedding is that instead of bringing everyone to a place they were already familiar with they brought everyone somewhere new. Lindsey and Jesse’s relationship has been a bit of a long distance journey, so why not make the wedding feel that way? Taking everyone out of their comfort zone is one of my favorite parts about destination weddings, it allows sides of families and friends who have never met before to rely on each other because everyone is in a new location. Lindsey and Jesse’s wedding built intimate bonds between guests that wouldn’t have been possible elsewhere. Thank you so much for the experience!
